RESOLUÇÃO N. 031/2022 - ERC 2022 - Analysis and synthesis of nonlinear systems can be tough depending on their nonlinear dynamics' complexity. An alternative to deal with this problem is the use of symbolic control based on symbolic abstractions to represent the system behaviour and the discretization of the state/input space. Based on those tools, directed graphs or hypergraphs can be employed to represent those systems, and several efficient pathfinding and graph search methods may enable the exploitation of these representations, and ease the analysis and design of nonlinear control systems. However, the bottleneck of such an approach is its scalability, since it may easily lead to high-dimensional graphs. It is possible to reduce the dimensionality at the price of increasing the over-approximation error of the reachability sets. This paper proposes using zonotopic partitions of the state and input space to obtain tighter estimations of the reachability sets and reduce the computational costs of symbolic control approaches. The zonotopes provide more flexible hulls than the traditional hyper-rectangle abstractions. Moreover, they are less conservative regarding several set operations which are relevant in reachability analysis, such as the Minkowski sum and Pontryagin difference..
