The standards IEC 62264 (“ISA95”) and IEC 61499 (“Function Blocks”) are highly influential in the generic parts of the design of (manufacturing) execution systems, but application developers must always complement them by domain-specific design choices. This paper presents best practices for two of the latter choices: “traceability” and “stability” in the coordination of order execution processes, distributed over two “lower” levels of ISA95, i.e., work unit and work center. The approach introduces specific compositions of three major coordination mechanisms, Petri Nets, Finite State Machines, and sequential protocols. The approach improves (i) the traceability of coordination by introducing strong resource dependency structures, and (ii) the stability of an order execution by introducing structure in the various types of execution disturbances.
